Why familiar videos feel more comforting than new ones

Lately I keep going back to the same videos in the evening instead of searching for new ones. It’s not even that they’re amazing — they’re just familiar. I already know what’s going to happen, and that somehow makes it easier to relax. Do you also rewatch things on purpose, or do you always look for something new?

I do that all the time, and I used to think it was a bit strange. But now I actually understand why it works. When you already know the

video, there’s zero effort involved — no need to pay close attention or expect something unexpected. It creates this safe, predictable feeling, which is perfect for evenings. I’ve even noticed that familiar videos feel “softer” emotionally, like they don’t demand anything from you. New content can be interesting, but it often pulls you in too much, and that’s not always what you want before rest.
